Every building project produces revisions. A beam gets deeper after structural checks, a client moves a bathroom, a window size changes because the manufacturer's standard differs. Revisions are normal. What causes damage is not the revision itself but uncertainty about which version is current.
On Pakistani sites, the pattern is familiar. A revised drawing is sent as a PDF on WhatsApp, the site engineer is on leave, the foreman still has the old print in his pocket, and a wall goes up in the wrong place. Breaking it costs more than drawing it correctly ever did.
What a Revision Should Carry
Every issued drawing needs a clear identity. At minimum:
- Drawing number: A unique reference that stays the same across revisions.
- Revision code: A letter or number that changes each time the drawing is reissued.
- Revision description: A short note saying what changed, such as "stair landing widened".
- Date and issuer: When it was issued and by whom.
- Clouding: Changed areas marked on the drawing so nobody has to hunt for them.
If a drawing on site does not carry this information, nobody can be sure it is current.
Use Transmittals, Not Loose Attachments
A drawing transmittal is a simple cover record that lists which drawings, at which revisions, were issued to whom and when. It sounds like paperwork, but it is what settles the question "did the contractor have the revised drawing?" when a dispute arises.

Keep One Register Per Project
A drawing register lists every drawing in the project with its latest revision. When a new revision is issued, the register is updated first. Anyone, whether architect, engineer, contractor or client, can check the register to see the current set.
On small projects this can be a spreadsheet. On larger projects with dozens of drawings across architecture, structure and MEP, a spreadsheet quickly drifts out of date. That is where drawing management tools earn their place: the register, revisions and transmittals are kept together, so issuing a revision updates everything at once.
Withdraw Superseded Drawings
Issuing a new revision is only half the job. The old one has to leave the site. We ask contractors to return or clearly mark superseded prints as void. Digital copies should be archived, not deleted, so there is a record of what was issued at each point.
Coordinate Before You Issue
Many revisions exist because disciplines were not coordinated before the first issue. An architectural plan that has not been checked against the structural grid will be revised the moment the structural drawings arrive. Coordination meetings before each issue reduce revisions dramatically.

Choosing a System
